burned shops and homes in an African American neighborhood in Longview, Texas. Gangs of
African American and whites fought each other for four days.
Worst Violencewas in Chicago. African Americans went to a whites- only beach. Both side
started throwing stones at each other. Whites also threw stones at a boy to stop him from coming ashore
and he ended drowning. Whites and African American were attacking each other's neighborhood. National
guard was sent in to stop the riot. By the time the rioting ended, 38 people had been killed--15 whites, and
23 blacks, and over 500 was injured.

After the war, and in 1919 the NAACP ( National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) launched a new
campaign for a federal law against lynching ( an execution performed without lawful approval).
